Ben Dellabarca

-Wellington

-Tēnā Koe, my name is Ben Dellabarca. My surname is Italian and means “of the boat” I’m 17 years old. I’m year 13 at Rongotai College, and I am the arts captain. I am passionate about art. My year 13 subjects are art-dominated. I’m taking painting, printmaking and photography and because I can’t take any more visual arts, I also take drama and classics. My first love in the arts is painting. I’ve always enjoyed painting ever since I was little but have really focused on it in the last three years. Painting is also part of my heritage, my great grandfather (Albert Bollard) was a commercial artist and my great great grandfather ( William Allen Bollard) was a full time painter. I like to include their surname when I sign my paintings as a nod to my whakapapa. I especially love to paint New Zealand landscapes and recently have been trying to capture water in my paintings (this time a nod to my Italian heritage). I’ve been focusing on water as I love the challenge of capturing so much movement. Most days I happily take myself down stairs to my small studio and paint. Some of my works have also been painted en plein air. I really love this way of working because it captures the mood and feeling of the landscape. Nga Mihi/Grazie. Ben Dellabarca.
