KILN-FIRED VITREOUS COPPER-ENAMELS.

I AM THE ONLY PRACTITIONER IN NEW ZEALAND WHO CREATES LARGE-SCALE WORKS OF ART IN ENAMEL-GLASS ON COPPER.

Commissions welcome.

My artworks are a unique twist to the ancient art form of kiln-fired vitreous enamelling with a strong New Zealand flavour. Although trained in Europe I now can look back at 35 years of artistic practice in Aotearoa...

My work can be found in various New Zealand and overseas private collections.

Over the years I have developed my very own technique of "segmentation": I hand-saw copper sheet metal into dozens or often hundreds of individually shaped pieces. Eventually they end up as an enamel mosaic that is incomparable in its technical approach, appearance and material to the classical ceramic and grout mosaics of antique Greece, Rome or contemporary equivalents. - In fact enamelling is originally an ancient Chinese jewellery technique...

In my approach each segment is being prepared like an individual piece of enamel jewellery. Firstly it is fired separately 3 to 7 times in a small jeweller's kiln to build up fused layers of enamels of various colours. Then eventually it becomes part of a larger image.

Enamels are exceptionally long lasting if they are treated with care: The colour pigments encapsulated in the protecting glazes are metal-based and won't fade or corrode for centuries. Indeed my creations have the potential to be "heirlooms of the future" for many generations to come...
