Matt Davidson

Napier, Hawke's Bay

Matt Davidson's paintings align abstraction with processes of layered construction to create a rhythmic balance between colour and space. Using rollers, brushes, and palette knives, he layers paint into strict geometries that create visual tension and harmony. His paintings are spatial, even sculptural, using palette, contrast and scale to create compositional stability within taped-off fields of acrylic colour. Toying with both surface texture and optical effects, Matt's work is informed by an ingrained sense of order, precision and structure. Matt began painting in his thirties after a long period of work as a Graphic Designer.
