Michael Hawkins

Michael Hawkins is a New Zealand Artist and Printmaker who works from his studio in Melbourne, Australia.
Hawkins practice is drawing-based and utilises screen printing and painting processes to explore the relationship between sign and signage. His work is characterised by a bold, graphic aesthetic and a playful yet (deceptively) sardonic humour.
Hawkins work process involves the strategic use of image saturation. He is interested in exploring the visual effects of information overload and in asking questions through these works of how we divide the meaningful from the inauthentic.
Some of the work available through the New Zealand Art show this year are limited edition, signed silkscreen print runs which will be posted unframed. Others are hybrid works that combine both painting and silkscreen printing onto canvas and compile a limited series of up to five where every artwork is the same but different.
Hawkins graduated from RMIT’s MFA program with distinction in 2013. He has exhibited widely and his work is held in private collections across New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the United States.
