Wellington Artist to Judge $20,000 RT Nelson Awards for Sculpture

The RT Nelson Awards for Sculpture is delighted to introduce the 2022 judge of the $20,000 RT Nelson Awards for Sculpture, Wellington artist Lynne Sandri.
Lynne has been a practicing artist for nearly 30 years and was involved with the NZ Art Show for 13 years as a Trustee, Selection Committee convenor, curator, and judge. She also has an extensive art collection which encompasses many media.
‘I feel very honoured to be invited to judge this year, ‘says Lynne. ‘It’s a hard act to follow in the footsteps of last year’s judge, Reuben Friend, but I aim to approach my role in this award from essentially a practical maker’s viewpoint.’
Lynne has an insatiable appetite and curiosity for art and, with more than 25 years’ experience of making a living as a full-time artist, Lynne will bring a fresh eye and perspective when judging these awards.

As an arts practitioner, Lynne has a deep understanding of the creative process and what is required to create excellent work. As a judge, curator and art collector she understands how the public engage with art.
When assessing the finalists, her focus will be about the story and the integrity behind each work; how the artist best uses their medium and the quality of the materials used.
‘To me, sculpture is simply a form of art that carries no criteria,’ says Lynne. ‘I love that it follows no rulebook; the medium is open, as is its shape, colour, use of technology, and value.

‘I’m very intrigued and excited to see the response from this creative community of skilled reputable sculptors – many award-winning already. I fully appreciate how much of their life goes into their work. I will honour the imagination, integrity and skill of each artist.
When assessing the finalists, Lynne will examine the stories and concepts behind each work, the quality of the media and how the artists treat their materials.
‘I’m proud to be a small part of these awards. They give sculptors the recognition they deserve and helps them to continue to thrive in their practice.
Lynne held a successful 15-year career in corporate banking before she pursued a full-time practice as an artist. Her commerce background was invaluable when establishing her art practice.

Lynne held a successful 15-year career in corporate banking before she pursued a full-time practice as an artist. Her commerce background was invaluable when establishing her art practice.
Life as an artist has kept her busy – experimenting with all kinds of media, participating in and organising numerous exhibitions in New Zealand and abroad, artist residencies, teaching and mentoring artists, judging art awards, and fulfilling numerous commissions. A 50–60-hour week is standard practice for her.

She operates out of her studio in Seatoun, Wellington, and enjoys both the business element and connecting directly with her clients.
Her latest commission is for Sir Robert Jones – ten big paintings for his corporate collection and one for his new building foyer.
