A Fond Farewell (But Not Goodbye): Celebrating Nearly Two Decades of Dedication — Midge Murray and the NZ Art Show

After 19 incredible years, the NZ Art Show is saying a fond farewell to one of its longest-serving team members and most loved personalities — Midge Murray.

Midge has worked alongside NZ Art Show Executive Director Carla Russell since the show’s earliest days, helping to shape what has become one of Aotearoa’s most beloved art events. From managing artist coordination to ensuring the show ran seamlessly year after year, Midge’s warmth, humour and commitment have left an indelible mark on the thousands of artists, collectors and volunteers who have passed through the show’s doors.

“Midge has been at the heart of the NZ Art Show since we started,” says Carla Russell. “She’s seen it all — from our humble beginnings in a small venue to the huge celebration it is today at TSB Arena. Her energy, care for artists and love of this event have helped make the show what it is. We’re so grateful for everything she’s brought to our team and our community.”

Since joining in 2006, Midge has been part of every major milestone in the show’s evolution — from record-breaking sales and award launches to navigating the challenges of the pandemic years. She became known for her ability to connect with artists, solve problems with grace, and bring laughter to even the busiest moments of show week.

While she’s stepping away from her official role, this isn’t goodbye. Midge will continue to be part of the NZ Art Show family — returning as an exhibiting artist and a friendly face behind the sales desk.

“You can’t get rid of me that easily!” Midge laughs. “The NZ Art Show is such a special community — it’s been my second home for nearly 20 years. I’ve met incredible people, seen extraordinary talent, and made lifelong friends. I’m proud of what we’ve built and excited to keep being part of it, just in a slightly different way.”

The 2026 NZ Art Show will open at TSB Arena and Shed 6, Wellington, from May 29 to June 1, 2026 — continuing the event’s 22-year tradition of celebrating New Zealand’s creative talent and the community that supports it.

“We’ll miss Midge’s day-to-day magic,” Carla adds, “but it feels right to celebrate her contribution and to know she’ll still be part of the next chapter. She’s part of our story — and always will be.”
