Behind the scenes with NZ Art Show collectors, Bev and Warren Charlton

Meet a pair of dedicated art supporters whose homes — from Oriental Bay to the Gold Coast to Martinborough — are filled with sculptural treasures discovered at the NZ Art Show.

They first joined the Show community through a friend, Chris Parkin, who invited them to become patrons. They jumped in straight away — and have rarely missed a year since.

Their approach to collecting is simple: follow curiosity, support new talent, and trust your instincts.

Collectors of the unique and the unexpected, their favourite finds include:
• a dragon’s head sculpted from old Evening Post newspapers
• two nude lady sculptures that always spark conversation
• a monumental lava-flow inspired log form from the Ōtaki River

Their favourite part of the show?

Gala Night — the thrill of the celebration once the artworks have already been secured earlier that day.

Their collection may be diverse, but every piece works in harmony — a testament to great design, great stories, and a love of three-dimensional forms that shine in their light-filled home.

What keeps them excited for the NZ Art Show each year?
Discovering the next surprising piece — maybe something small for the coffee table this time — and cheering on artists with bold new ideas.

Art lovers, supporters, discoverers of the unexpected.
Their passion helps fuel the creative community that makes the NZ Art Show what it is.
