A Love Letter to Midge

By Carla Russell, Executive Director – NZ Art Show

For nearly two decades, there’s been one constant at the heart of the NZ Art Show — a steady, smiling, unstoppable presence who somehow manages to juggle artists, chaos, laughter, and logistics all at once.
Her name is Midge Murray, and this is my love letter to her. 💛

Midge joined the show way back in the early days — before we’d filled the TSB Arena, before the walls stretched from Shed 6 to the waterfront, and before most of us knew what it would become. What I did know was that we had something special — and that Midge was part of it from the very start.

From that moment on, she became woven into the story of the NZ Art Show — in every burst of laughter during pack-in, every artist greeted with warmth, and every moment of mayhem turned into fun. Midge reminds us all that art isn’t just about what hangs on the walls — it’s about people, connection, joy, and the wonderful chaos that creativity brings.

She’s been there through it all — the frantic Fridays, the late-night resets, the quiet moments before opening, and the rush of people through the doors. Always there, always laughing, always full of heart.

For almost twenty years, Midge and I have worked side by side — building the show, sharing the madness, and finding joy in the work. Our friendship and mutual respect have been the steady rhythm behind the NZ Art Show’s heartbeat — a partnership built on trust, humour, and an unshakeable belief in what we do.

And then there’s Claire Cairns, who joined us and completed what I like to call the dynamic duo that became a trio. Together, we’ve weathered storms, lifted walls, wrangled artists, solved problems, and celebrated countless wins. We’ve laughed until we cried (sometimes literally), and together we’ve built something that’s bigger than all of us — a community, a celebration, a family.

Midge has never been calm under pressure — and thank goodness for that. She thrives in the whirlwind, bringing lightness and laughter when we need it most. She has an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel at ease — to find the joy in the moment, the humour in the madness, and the humanity in it all.

Her love of art — and of artists — is at the core of who she is. She believes in people. She listens, she encourages, she connects. She makes everyone feel seen.

And while she’s stepping away from her official role, it’s far from goodbye. You’ll still see Midge at the NZ Art Show — behind the sales desk, chatting to artists, or maybe even exhibiting her own work. Because once you’re part of this show, you never really leave.

From me — and from every artist, volunteer, sponsor, and friend who’s ever shared a laugh with her —
thank you, Midge.
For 19 years of laughter, love, and loyalty.
For your energy, your generosity, your belief in this show, and in me.
For being my colleague, my sounding board, and my dear friend.

We love you endlessly.
See you at the show. 💛
