NZ Art Show Generates More Than $1.5 Million in Art Sales, Proving Wellington’s Creative Spirit is Alive and Well
While headlines continue to focus on Wellington’s challenges, the 2026 NZ Art Show has delivered a powerful reminder that the city’s creative spirit (and economy) remain vibrant.
Over King’s Birthday Weekend, more than 15,000 visitors attended the NZ Art Show, contributing to more than $1.5 million in artwork sales and making this year’s event one of the most successful in the show’s 23-year history.
The Show began on Thursday morning with a VIP Preview and mihi from mana whenua representative Kurt Smith-Komene, who welcomed artists, sponsors, supporters, and guests into a space of creativity, connection, and belonging. That sense of manaakitanga carried throughout the weekend, setting the tone for a celebration of New Zealand art and the communities it brings together.
A sold-out Gala Evening welcomed 1,200 guests on opening night, with thousands more visitors coming through the doors across the weekend to discover, connect with, and purchase original New Zealand art from more than 200 artists representing every corner of Aotearoa.
Executive Director Carla Russell says the result sends a clear message about the role arts, culture, and events continue to play in Wellington.
“There’s been a lot of discussion recently about Wellington’s future, but what we experienced over the weekend was a city full of energy, optimism, connection, and creativity. The NZ Art Show reminded us that people still want to come together, support artists, and invest in experiences that enrich their lives.
“Artists could have listened to the doom and gloom. Instead, more than 200 artists from throughout New Zealand chose to place their trust in Wellington, in this event, and in the thousands of people who continue to support art and creativity. Their faith was rewarded.”
The more than $1.5 million generated in art sales represents a significant economic boost for artists and creative businesses throughout New Zealand, while also contributing to Wellington’s visitor economy through accommodation, hospitality, retail, and tourism spending.
The success of the event was made possible through the support of sponsors, partners, Friends of the NZ Art Show, volunteers, collectors, and thousands of visitors who chose to spend their long weekend celebrating New Zealand creativity.
“For 23 years, the NZ Art Show has been creating opportunities for artists and helping New Zealanders connect with original art. What we’ve seen this weekend is proof that Wellington’s love affair with the arts remains as strong as ever.
“Events bring people into the city. They create reasons to connect, to explore, to spend, and to celebrate what makes Wellington unique. The success of this year’s NZ Art Show is a reminder that arts and culture are not a luxury; they are an essential part of a thriving city.”
As the final artworks were packed up on Sunday evening, the mood among artists, visitors, volunteers, and organisers was overwhelmingly positive.
“People were leaving with artworks under their arms, artists were celebrating sales and new opportunities, and thousands of conversations had taken place. That’s the Wellington we know and love.
“In a world that can often feel uncertain, art continues to bring people together. This weekend proved that Wellington’s creative heart is beating strongly.”
